Hackley Library

Muskegon, Michigan

Muskegon lumberman Charles Hackley donated the funds for this beautiful Richardsonian Romanesque library in Muskegon. Much of the interior is original, including the cast iron book racks and glass floors in the stack area. The building was designed with permanent materials – granite, sandstone, slate and copper – but even these need some maintenance.

Over the years, we have replaced the gutters, done extensive masonry repointing and repair, maintained the slate roof, repaired windows and duplicated a red sandstone element from salvaged matching stone.
