DeZwaan Windmill
Holland, Michigan, was settled by Dutch immigrants, and in 1961, the city acquired from The Netherlands a historic windmill damaged during the Second World War. It was rebuilt and restored, but a half-century later needed major work again. Working with Elzinga & Volkers of Holland, and Verbij BV of The Netherlands, we clad the cap in new custom copper shingles and resided the octagonal base with cedar shingles. The irregular shape of the cap presented continual challenges for shaping and installing flashing work, and for detailing to resist the effects of wind.
