Little things matter
The little details incorporated into a project can often give it the appearance of something “off the shelf” or something special.
One detail often overlooked in the construction of exterior elements on a building is the way light and shadow behave. Sharp, tight corners on moldings give off different shadows than corners that are rounded and soft. You often find these details play an important role in historic buildings.
The moldings mass-produced today and sold in lumber yards or big box stores often have edges that have been rounded off for the sake of production. If they tried to produce pieces with sharp corners they would have a lot of wood blow out or the quality of the wood just couldn’t hold a sharp edge.
The ability to make the knives that produce copies of original moldings, matching the exact size and details, is important to protect the original intent of the architect. A mass-produced molding used to replace an original piece that has become rotted or decayed will change the appearance of the building, and once the original piece is discarded it is gone forever.

These details can also apply to newly added porches or entryways. We want to give these areas the appearance of having been there since the beginning. It is very difficult to get newly constructed elements to look original when using mass-produced moldings of today.
